Background

After more than ten years as an Abel client, Baltimore’s premier service organization, Civic Works, was ready to enter their next phase. After a sizable charitable donation, the client decided to invest in reexamining their messaging and visual style in order to strengthen their foundation as they transitioned into a new website and an expanded scope.

Hidden in Plain Sight

By sitting down with people at all levels of the organization, we were able to uncover latent truths about their audience’s communication preferences, challenging our assumptions and ensuring our strategy was rooted in the lived experience of the people Civic Works serves.

Organizational Hierarchy

We streamlined the structure and descriptions of Civic Works’ many programs to aid navigation, understanding, and conversion.

The revised Civic Works program structure is divided into 4 categories for clarity. The categories include the following: Teaching Trades, Healthy Foods and Green Communities, Civic Works Energy Program, and Safe and Affordable Housing.

Prioritizing Accessibility

Civic Works serves a broad and diverse community in Baltimore, including many adults at varying literacy levels. Through stakeholder interviews, we uncovered a need for more inclusive, approachable communications and branding. Accessibility became a central focus of our work—informing our research, messaging, and design choices to ensure Civic Works could better reach and reflect the people they serve.

Our accessibility-first approach includes: a brand audit, plain language messaging, AAA compliant brand colors, and clear website structure.
